Where to begin?
Well, I guess we’ll start by thanking Brittney & Mike for a) going along with some of our crazy ideas, b) being total legends for braving cold September rain and c) having the guts to elope the way they wanted, and putting themselves first.
Ok, story time.
It’s so early in the morning, it still feels like the middle of the night and we (Sean & Jeremy) hop in the car and start the drive to St Martins for our first elopement together. The goal was meet Brittney & Mike in time for a sunrise elopement, but Mother Nature had a different plan. Rain. Luckily with the location we chose, the tide would be low and we could seek shelter in the various sea caves. We were prepared for this, so no big deal.
When we arrive, it’s still pitch black, so while waiting for the sun to rise, we get out the flashlights and make our way down to the cave where the ceremony will take place.
What we didn’t prepare for was the rain raising the water level of a small stream we had to cross in order to reach the cave. We had brought an old deck board to fashion a makeshift bridge, but the water was so high now the board wouldn’t reach both sides. Oh boy.
We spent the next 20 minutes or so moving rocks to try and make it work, and we eventually found a sketchy path across (see the second to last photo below) that would keep everyone dry.
Back to the cars we went to get Brittney, Mike and the officiant Jon O’Kane. We made our way down, across the sketchy “bridge”, into the cave and then, standing on the ocean floor, the ceremony began.
We spent the next couple hours getting totally soaked, in the most unforgettable experience. That’s the thing about elopements, you can get away with doing things you can’t on a typical wedding day, and that’s why we love them so much.
Here’s what it all looked like.
